DoNotPay - THE AI LAWYER
2025
The "World's First Robot Lawyer" DoNotPay promised to be the AI solution to all smaller legal cases such as cancelling subscriptions, challenge parking tickets, even taking on lawsuits in small claims court. Finally an affordable lawyer! The company boldly claimed to replace the “the $200-billion-dollar legal industry with artificial intelligence.”
But of course it wasn’t quite what it claimed. Beneath the hype, the AI was a series of scripts that generated documents riddled with errors. The company that promised to help people sue corporations soon found itself facing a lawsuit for false advertising and, ironically, practicing law without a license.
In 2025, the U.S. Federal Trade Commission issued a formal order: DoNotPay must stop calling itself a lawyer substitute. Furthermore the company was required to notify past subscribers of its limitations, and pay $193,000 because of fraudulent claims.
