Washington Post AI podcasts
2025
In 2025 The Washington Post decided to launch AI-generated personalized podcasts. Subscribers could select their favorite topics, adjust the length, choose an AI-generated host, and bam an AI podcast was generated. The AI speech even simulate natural speech with realistic "ums," "uhs," and strategic pauses.
It turned out that while the AI had perfectly mastered the art of saying "uh," it hadn't exactly mastered the art of telling the truth. Within 48 hours of rollout, the product suffered a spectacular editorial meltdown. It didn't just mispronounce words, it actively hallucinated content. The software began misattributing statements, inventing fictional quotes, and inserting its own editorial commentary, framing random opinions as the official stance of The Washington Post.
Journalist were furious as they watched their hard earned credibility destroyed. Rather than immediately pulling the plug on the system management decided to leave the tool live, reassuring furious journalists that user data was collected and things would improve with the next iteration.
There was no next time. Billionaire owner of The Washington Post, Jeff Bezos killed it. His aggressive restructuring, staff cuts and artificial intelligence mandates ultimately killed all the Post’s podcasts, human and AI.
