DivX
1998 - 1999
DivX was a widely hated platform that was hounded to its death by disgruntled consumers who had to buy an expensive DivX player and connect it to their phone line. The disposable discs could only be used for a limited time. Once you started watching a movie, you had only 48 hours to watch it. In the late 1990s, consumers were tired of having to buy several different media players. The fact that the player spied on customers and uploaded data to the manufacturer was also a problem. DivX flopped and was discontinued within a year.
